Man and woman found dead inside apartment in Birmingham’s Kingston community

An investigation is underway after a man and a woman were found dead in a Birmingham apartment complex.

South Precinct officers were called to the Rev. Dr Morrell Todd Homes in the city’s Kingston community about 9:15 a.m. Sunday. The apartment unit is in the 900 block of 45 Place North.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said family members had not heard from or seen the victims for a period of time and became concerned. A friend went to the apartment and found both unresponsive.

Both were dead on the scene.

Fitzgerald said officers did not immediately see any signs of trauma to the victims. Their deaths are being called unclassified.

“Our team just did not observe anything out of the normal,’’ he said.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will conduct autopsies to try to determine the cause and manner of death.

Dozens of community members gathered at the scene Sunday morning.

“We have a lot of friends and family out here and everyone is concerned,’’ Fitzgerald said. “No matter what, we have two people who were found deceased in the community and they’re distraught over it.”
